SeLe - Independent Living
Standing together for participation
and self-determination

Who We Are
We are a group of committed and motivated people who have experienced one or more mental health crises and want to use those experiences to make a positive difference and share what they have learned.
Because every person's experiences are unique, we welcome a wide range of perspectives on mental health and psychiatric care. We meet regularly to exchange ideas, support one another, and work together toward our shared vision and goals.
By sharing our lived experiences, we aim to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and pass on valuable knowledge. Everyone in our group has a voice, and every member is encouraged to contribute their own experiences, ideas, and perspectives.

Our History
SeLe originated from the "Arbeitskreis Teilhabe Mit-Wirkung" (Working Group for Participation and Involvement). In 2016, the former group PEB (Psychiatrie-Erfahrene Bonn – People with Lived Experience of Psychiatry in Bonn) evolved into what is now known as SeLe.
Today, SeLe is an open and welcoming group where people share their lived experiences. At the heart of our work are mutual exchange, peer support, and the collaborative development of new ideas and projects. We believe that lived experience is a valuable source of knowledge that can inspire change, strengthen individuals, and contribute to a more inclusive society.
Our Vision, Values and Goals
Vision
An inclusive and self-determined life for people who have experienced mental health crises or mental illness, with genuine opportunities for participation and inclusion in everyday life.
Values
Self-determination, inclusion, empowerment, and recovery – a strengths-based approach that focuses on people's resources, resilience, and personal recovery journey.
Goals
To improve quality of life, promote meaningful participation in society, and remove barriers to inclusion. We pursue these goals through peer support, where people support one another as equals, and through EX-IN (Experienced Involvement) Peer Support, an internationally recognised training programme that enables people with lived experience of mental health challenges to support others on their recovery journey.
What We Do
Advocacy and Representation
We advocate for the rights, interests, and needs of people with mental health conditions and lived experience of mental health crises. We work to ensure that their voices are heard and that their needs are recognised in society.
Networking and Collaboration
We work closely with organisations and stakeholders across the mental health support system, local government, and civil society. This includes participation in initiatives such as the Arbeitskreis Teilhabe Mit-Wirkung (Working Group for Participation and Involvement), the Bonn – A Place for Everyone network, and representing people with lived experience within the Community Mental Health Network (Gemeindepsychiatrischer Verbund).
Anti-Stigma and Public Awareness
We are committed to reducing stigma and discrimination by promoting understanding, raising public awareness, and challenging prejudice surrounding mental health.
Peer Support and Guidance
We offer peer-to-peer conversations and support based on lived experience. By sharing our own recovery journeys, we provide understanding, encouragement, and hope while meeting others on equal terms.

„The Listening Ear“
Do you have questions or need support? We offer a safe and welcoming space for conversation, as well as peer-to-peer support and guidance. This means that people with lived experience provide support based on their own personal experiences with mental health challenges and recovery.
